In a statement released today, Brisa roadside assistance workers demand a "better compensation for shift work, holidays, Christmas, Easter and nights", arguing that, in the last two years, "they have accumulated a loss of income of over 1% compared to inflation", while "the company makes a profit of 496.8 million euros".

"The mechanics feel wronged because the company only chooses some sectors to renegotiate careers and betrayed by those who should represent them, in particular SETACCOP [Construction, Public Works and Services Union]", they claim.

The Lusa agency contacted Brisa for a comment, but is still waiting for a response.

According to the statement, "the employees are against the decrease in purchasing power, shifts in which they drive vehicles six days a week and the performance of free work", therefore demanding a restructuring of their respective professional career.

Regarding the salary scale, Brisa mechanics argue that, in the last 22 years, since the company's privatisation, "it has had a real appreciation of 36 euros": "In 2002, a mechanic at the beginning of his career earned two national minimum wages and currently 1.36, which proves the career's regression", they specify.

Another of the workers' demands is the change in the service scale, since the current model, with only one day of weekly rest, "has a great impact on the workers' personal and professional lives, in particular those who drive hundreds of kilometres daily".

"There is a scale in the company with two days of weekly rest, applied only to some motorways, violating the constitutional principle of equal work equal pay'", they note.

According to Brisa roadside assistance workers, "the company publicly promotes the safety and rest of drivers, but does not apply it to its own employees".

The allocation of an Unhealthiness, Hardship and Risk allowance is another of the demands of Brisa mechanics, taking into account "the functional overload, the increased probability of injury and the aggravated risk of the function".

The group signing the petition includes about 220 mechanics from Brisa Operation & Maintenance (O&M), distributed over 18 centres on 14 motorways in the country.

They are responsible for patrolling and assisting drivers who travel on the 1,549 kilometres and service stations concessioned or managed by Brisa, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, travelling about 10.7 million kilometres annually.
