New consumer credit volume falls 8.3% in March to 685 million
New consumer loans in March totaled 685 million euros, a decrease of 8.3% year-on-year and 1.0% compared to the previous month, the Banco de Portugal (BdP) announced today.

According to the provisional data released today by the central bank on the evolution of new consumer loans, in March, the amounts of new personal loans fell by 3.9%, to 306 million euros, and car loans by 0.5%, to 252 million euros. In turn, the amount of cards and overdrafts increased by 5.8%, to 127 million euros.
The number of loans fell by 2.3% year-on-year to 146,363, still translating into a 2.4% increase in chain.
In March, 126,594 loans were taken out in the cards and overdrafts category (up 2.5% year-on-year), 45,588 personal loans (-11%) and 16,303 loans for the purchase of cars (-5.6%).
Of the total new loan contracts in March, 4.0% were subsidized contracts, against 5.1% a year earlier and 4.6% in February.
"Subsidized loan contracts are entered into between the credit institution and the consumer, but part of the cost of the loan is borne by a third party (for example, the point of sale where the consumer acquires the financed asset)", explains the BdP.
As a proportion of the total amount, these subsidized loans represented 5.7% in March, against 7.7% in March 2023 and 6.0% in February.
