According to the provisional data released today by the central bank on the evolution of new consumer loans, in March, the amounts of new personal loans fell by 3.9%, to 306 million euros, and car loans by 0.5%, to 252 million euros. In turn, the amount of cards and overdrafts increased by 5.8%, to 127 million euros.

The number of loans fell by 2.3% year-on-year to 146,363, still translating into a 2.4% increase in chain.

In March, 126,594 loans were taken out in the cards and overdrafts category (up 2.5% year-on-year), 45,588 personal loans (-11%) and 16,303 loans for the purchase of cars (-5.6%).

Of the total new loan contracts in March, 4.0% were subsidized contracts, against 5.1% a year earlier and 4.6% in February.

"Subsidized loan contracts are entered into between the credit institution and the consumer, but part of the cost of the loan is borne by a third party (for example, the point of sale where the consumer acquires the financed asset)", explains the BdP.

As a proportion of the total amount, these subsidized loans represented 5.7% in March, against 7.7% in March 2023 and 6.0% in February.
