The EU statistical service also highlights that, compared to the previous year, pesticide sales fell by 10%, to around 322 thousand tonnes, a variation that is justified by the price increase.
Among the countries for which data is available, France (21%), Spain (18%), Germany (15%) and Italy (14%) -- the four largest agricultural producers in the EU -- recorded the highest percentages of pesticides sold and, together, accounted for more than two thirds of the annual sales volume of these products between 2011 and 2022.
Compared to 2011, the year in which Eurostat started the series, the largest drops in pesticide sales were observed in Italy (-37%), Portugal (-36%) and Greece (-33%).
The main category of pesticides sold in the EU was, in 2022, fungicides and bactericides (43% of the total), followed by herbicides, algae and background removers (35%) and the category of insecticides and acaricides (14%).
In February, the European Commission withdrew the proposal to halve the use of pesticides in agriculture by 2030, which had already been rejected by the European Parliament and was one of the targets of recent protests by farmers in the EU.
