In a statement published today on its website, AMT -- as the transport regulator -- reports that this year it has already received 23 complaints related to "alleged scams in the context of passenger transport by taxi (namely, trip price without using the taximeter and well above the price charged)".
According to the body, in 2022 23 complaints were also received for the same reason, while last year 28 complaints reached AMT.
AMT warns that it has also received "reports of illegal customer canvassing at airports (by direct contact with the customer), by alleged TVDE operators and drivers".
According to AMT, in addition to the steps taken by it, the complaints and reports have been forwarded to the competent authorities, "considering that they may constitute a criminal offence".
"Despite the constant action by the supervisory authorities, the verification of such situations continues to increase, with obvious prejudice to the quality of the service provided and to the rights of passengers, showing an exploitation, which AMT cannot fail to censure, of the situation of vulnerability of tourists and other users of these services, who are less aware of the operating rules in Portugal of the markets in question", reads the note.
Thus, AMT recommends to ANA-Aeroportos de Portugal the dissemination inside airports, namely in the arrivals area, of "clear, appealing and visible" general information on fares, timetables, vehicle characteristics, supplements and invoice issuance, in order to promote literacy about the taxi and TVDE service.
AMT stresses that the measure will protect citizens arriving at international airports in Portugal "and who are potential victims of the alleged scams".
The Transport Authority recommends, in turn, to the associations of taxi and TVDE operators to "raise awareness among their members of the situation that has been occurring and of the obligation to comply with the applicable rules".
