A Quebec family says the remains they received are not those of their father, who died while on vacation in Cuba, but of another man.
The funeral was scheduled to take place. But instead of mourning her father, Miriam Jarjour has spent her days on the phone and writing emails trying to get her family member’s body back. “We have no answers yet,” Jarjour said. “Where is my dad?” she asked.
According to the Associated Press, Jarjour was swimming with her father March 22 near Varadero, Cuba, when the 68-year-old man suffered a heart attack and died. Because there were no medical facilities nearby, his body was put in a beach chair, where it remained for eight hours until a vehicle arrived to take it to Havana.
The victim’s daughter said she followed the instructions of the Canadian consulate and paid $7,300 for the body to be sent to Canada. But the coffin that arrived contained the body of a Russian man at least 20 years younger than Faraj Allah Jarjour. The body also had hair and was covered in tattoos.
Jarjour said the stranger’s body has been sent back to his home country, but she still doesn’t know where her father’s body is. “Honestly, I’m devastated,” Jarjour said. “We have no answers yet. We’re just waiting. I don’t even know what to say,” she said.
