The operation took place in the morning, when the Italian Navy frigate "Virginio Fasan", which was monitoring a merchant ship sailing in the Red Sea as part of the European mission ASPIDES, as it passed through the Strait of Bab-el-Mandeb.

The drone, according to a statement from the ministry, "had similar characteristics to those used in previous Houthi attacks" and was five kilometers from the Italian ship, heading towards the escorted merchant ship.

However, the Italian warship managed to shoot it down and continue its route south in the Red Sea.

The ships recorded several missile and drone attacks throughout the morning, but they were avoided with "evasive maneuvers" at sea, although a projectile exploded in the water near the commercial ship, causing only "slight superficial damage".
