The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating nearly 200 cases of norovirus infections detected in just April on two cruise ships — one that sailed from Tampa, Florida, and the other from Los Angeles, California.
The norovirus outbreak on Royal Caribbean’s “Radiance of the Seas,” which departed from Tampa on April 8, sickened 67 of the 1,993 passengers who were on the 14-day cruise, as well as two crew members, the CDC said in a statement cited by La Vanguardia.
Another 94 passengers, out of 2,532, and 20 crew members on the “Sapphire Princess” ship, operated by Princess Cruises, also became infected with the virus during a cruise that departed April 5 from Los Angeles and made stops in Hawaii and the South Pacific.
The CDC said the pathogen causing the illnesses was a norovirus strain and that the predominant symptoms reported by the sickened passengers were those of gastroenteritis, such as diarrhea and vomiting.
In response to the outbreaks, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean Cruises “collected stool specimens from ill passengers with gastrointestinal illness for testing,” isolated sick passengers and crew members and “increased cleaning and disinfection procedures in accordance with the ship’s outbreak prevention and response plan,” the companies said.
Norovirus infections are generally not serious but do cause diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain. It is spread from person to person through the ingestion of contaminated food or water or by touching surfaces that have the virus on them.
