A flight scheduled to depart last week to Tokyo, Japan, was canceled after the pilot became intoxicated at a hotel in Dallas, Texas.
According to a statement released Tuesday by Japan Airlines, the incident occurred on the 22nd when the captain became intoxicated "and began behaving in a disorderly manner" at the hotel where he and his crew were staying.
The captain has not been identified, and the airline did not elaborate on the specific behaviors he exhibited, saying only that it "caused inconvenience to staff and other guests."
Authorities were called to the scene, and the pilot was issued a "warning."
According to the Japanese airline, the captain had no detectable alcohol in his system at the time he was scheduled to depart on the flight, but airline officials decided he was unfit to fly due to the "need to confirm the mental and physical condition of the crew."
The statement said that a new crew would have to be flown in from Japan, and in order to expedite the process — namely, to save time — passengers were rebooked on other flights.
At the time, passengers were told that the cancellation was due to "health reasons" affecting the flight crew.
"We sincerely apologize to all customers who were inconvenienced by this flight cancellation. We are fully aware of the seriousness of the situation," the statement read, adding that the airline would "implement measures" in the wake of the incident so that customers "can regain trust."
