Uribe is suspected of having "offered money and other benefits to certain witnesses of criminal acts so that they would hide the truth", in a case that links him to paramilitary groups, according to the indictment, presented by prosecutor Gilberto Villarreal on Friday.

During the last session of the trial's preliminary proceedings, on May 18, Uribe, who appeared by videoconference, reiterated his innocence and asked for the charges to be dropped.

"I never took the initiative to seek out witnesses. I sought to defend my reputation," said the former head of state.

Judge Sandra Heredia rejected the request and recognized as possible victims a senator, the ex-wife of a paramilitary who helped link Uribe to armed groups and two former prosecutors.

The case dates back to 2012, when Uribe sued Ivan Cepeda, a senator for the left-wing Alternative Democratic Pole party, for alleged witness tampering. Cepeda was then preparing to file a complaint in the Colombian parliament against Uribe, for alleged links to paramilitaries.

However, at the time, the Supreme Court decided not to open an investigation against the congressman.

Instead, it initiated proceedings against the former president for witness tampering.

The bribery charge is associated with the alleged payment of bribes to Carlos Enrique Vélez and Juan Guillermo Monsalve, who are being held in the Palmira and La Picota prisons in Bogotá, respectively, as well as to a woman identified as Eurídice Cortés, so that they would benefit the former president in their statements.
