'Bata Branca' guaranteed 12,500 consultations to users without a doctor in Ourém
The "Bata Branca" project has guaranteed, since June last year, 12,500 consultations to users of the municipality of Ourém without a family doctor, the president of the municipality, Luís Albuquerque, told the Lusa agency today.

"Eleven months later, the assessment is frankly positive", stated Luís Albuquerque, explaining that the project is allowing for "doctors in all of the municipality's extensions, including the Ourém health centre, and who have helped to solve this problem that we have identified for a long time", the lack of family doctors.
According to the mayor, the project has already involved 11 doctors, who have provided service "3,334 hours, which gives an average of 12,500 consultations".
"It clearly demonstrates the importance of the project (...) in favour of the health of our users", he added, emphasising that these are assistant doctors and not family doctors and that the "ideal solution" would be for the municipality to have more family doctors.
In April 2023, the Ourém City Council announced that it would co-fund consultations for users without a family doctor, within the scope of a cooperation agreement with the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo Regional Health Administration and the Union of Portuguese Misericórdias (UMP), delegated to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia Fátima-Ourém.
In February, a new cooperation agreement was signed involving the Leiria Region Local Health Unit (ULS RL, to which the municipality was transferred).
At the time, the Santa Casa undertook to provide an additional 50 weekly hours until the end of this year in addition to the 100 weekly hours already agreed, "to fill the gaps in consultations", according to information provided by the Ourém City Council.
According to the agreement, the ULS RL is responsible for paying €27/hour and the municipality €15/hour to the doctors.
"The doctors earn €40 an hour for being in this project and two euros are for the administrative expenses that the Santa Casa has in this process", stated the president of the municipality in the district of Santarém.
Luís Albuquerque stressed that this is a "very great" effort that the municipality is making in relation to a competence that belongs to the State.
"We understand that [we] should face the need and the urgency that we had to have more doctors working in the municipality of Ourém", he stated.
For the mayor, the alternative to this project is to hire more family doctors and create a Family Health Unit in the municipality's headquarters, as exists in Fátima.
"That is the alternative that we are trying, together with the ULS, to bring to the municipality again, because that is the ideal solution in terms of providing healthcare", stated Luís Albuquerque.
