A new recommendation from the Preventive Services Task Force this week said women should get their first mammogram to screen for breast cancer at age 40, a decade earlier than previously recommended.

On Thursday, the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) published an alert on social media about this cancer.

"In Portugal, 5 women die per day from breast cancer," the officials began by writing in a publication shared on social network X (formerly Twitter).

In the publication, the DGS reminds the public of the current recommendations in the country, noting that "prevention is essential."

On its website, the DGS maintains the recommendations it had until then. "In the case of breast cancer, the consensus includes performing a mammogram every two years, from age 50 to 69," it says.

On the same page, the health authority also discusses screening for other cancers, such as colorectal and cervical cancer. In the first case, screening "includes the fecal occult blood test from age 50 to 74." In the second case, "screening includes the cervical cytology test (Pap smear) in women between the ages of 20 and 30 and up to 60 years of age."

"These screenings have been shown to reduce mortality by approximately 30% for breast cancer, 20% for colorectal cancer, and 80% for cervical cancer," the DGS also warns.
