The Portuguese Navy shared images on social media of the submarine NRP Arpão sailing in the waters of the Arctic Ocean.

"Send your congratulations message to the entire crew for this unique moment", appealed the Navy in the publication, after the ship became the first Portuguese submarine to sail under the Arctic ice.

You can watch the video in the gallery that accompanies this news.

"The NRP Arpão has become, if not the first, one of the very few conventional submarines to sail under the ice, an area normally reserved for nuclear-powered submarines. It remained under the ice sheet for a total of about four days, having also explored the operation in the Marginal Ice Zone, with a high density of loose ice, an area with high tactical value, an area in which no other western submarine has dared to operate, since the Second World War, with total success"", the Navy had previously indicated in a statement.

The submarine 'Arpão' departed from the Lisbon Naval Base on April 3, with 36 military personnel on board, to participate in the Atlantic Alliance's 'Brilliant Shield' operation. On the occasion, the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo, stressed the "high importance" of this mission as it was the first time that a Portuguese submarine would operate "under the Arctic ice".

In a statement, the Navy indicates that on April 28, the 'Arpão' left the port of Nuuk, in Greenland, "to carry out Operation ARCTIC 2024", which was attended by Gouveia e Melo, "dean of active submariners".

The following day, it passed the "mythical parallel 66º33'N, which marks the border of the Arctic Circle, something that, like crossing the Equator, is a relevant mark for all sailors", highlights the Navy, noting that "this mark had not yet been reached by Portuguese submariners".

The submarine returned to the surface "safely" on April 3 and the Navy stresses that this was "one of the greatest adventures" of this ship to date.
