"I must say that we have many challenges, common challenges: climate change, soil quality, world conflicts, high inflation and world population growth -- we are eight billion, but in 2050 we will be nine billion", said the government official at the European conference "PEI-AGRI Operational Groups: Innovation in practice", in Estoril.

In his speech, at the conference that will be held until Wednesday at the Estoril Congress Centre, José Manuel Fernandes defended that "it is vital that agriculture evolves and responds to these challenges proactively".

"We must continue to produce high-quality food, ensuring food security and high environmental standards at affordable prices. The objective of the CAP [Common Agricultural Policy] is to achieve this, but we need research, we need innovation", added the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries.

The former MEP also asked that the CAP's resources be used "efficiently to support farmers and promote agricultural sustainability throughout the EU and also to help rural development".

The CAP is a policy common to all EU countries, managed and financed at European level, based on the resources of the Community budget.

Approximately 38% of the Community budget (equivalent to 0.4% of the Gross Domestic Product - GDP of the Union) is allocated to agriculture and rural development.

In the EU, there are around 10 million farms, with around 17 million people working regularly in the agricultural sector, which represents around 4% of employment.

In April, the European Parliament approved a revision of the CAP, relaxing some environmental rules and reducing the administrative burden on farmers.
