The initiative "Women in Braço de Prata" will give seven new streets the names of women "who deeply marked thought, history, society and culture in the 20th and 21st centuries", underlines the capital's local authority, in a statement.
The seven women honored are the ballerina and choreographer Águeda Sena (1927-2019), the fado singer Celeste Rodrigues (1923-2018), the actress Fernanda Montemor (1935-2015), the pianist and anti-racist activist Georgina Ribas (1882-1951), the singer Madalena Iglésias (1939-2018), the religious missionary Teresa of Calcutta (1910-1997) and the fado singer Teresa Tarouca (1942-2019).
According to the statement, the local authority wants to praise "the inspiring path" of these seven women, giving them "more public visibility".
To inscribe "their names in the public space of the city of Lisbon" is, at the same time, a recognition that it is necessary to "reverse a trend that has been seen over time, and which has dictated a majority of male names in the city's toponymy", notes the City Council.
The ceremony to award the street names will take place on Saturday, at 4 pm, and will include a musical moment with the fado singer Lina, who sings the poetry of Luís Vaz de Camões.
