Figueira da Foz mayor considers swimming pool purchase "balanced"
The Mayor of Figueira da Foz considered today that the purchase of a gym with an indoor private swimming pool in the city centre is a "balanced solution" given the need for new equipment.

In today's Chamber session, Pedro Santana Lopes stressed that people, especially young people and the elderly, "will stop going to the [swimming pools of] Alhadas or Paião, a concern that was the basis for the acquisition".
The municipality of Figueira da Foz, in the district of Coimbra, acquired for about 475 thousand euros (with filling) a gym and indoor swimming pool, which had been closed to the public since the covid-19 pandemic, in the basement of the Edifício Portugal, in Bairro Novo, in the city center.
According to the mayor, the equipment will undergo a requalification that is being planned by the municipal services, including improving the connection to the outside and expanding the area for hydrotherapy, in time to reopen at the beginning of the next school year for the entire community.
With this acquisition, the construction of a new indoor swimming pool in the city is ruled out for now, whose studies pointed to an investment in the order of six million euros and maintenance costs of one million euros per year.
"I understand that it is a balanced solution and, from the reactions that reached me, the population was quite satisfied with this decision", stressed Pedro Santana Lopes, who answered questions raised by the socialist councilor Diana Rodrigues.
The PS councilor said that the solution "seemed interesting", but questioned the Mayor about whether this acquisition made a new swimming pool and a new pavilion in Figueira da Foz unfeasible and the form of management.
Without directly answering the question of a new swimming pool, Santana Lopes said that the management of the equipment had not yet been defined, but that the idea was through municipal services.
