According to the program, published on the official website of the Navy, some of the activities in Aveiro have already begun in the first few days of this month, but will start in full on Wednesday and will extend until the 20th, the date on which the navigator Vasco da Gama reached India by sea in 1498.
The program includes demonstrations of military tactics or 'drones' and visits to the Training Ship Sagres, which for the first time in its 87 years of existence is docked at Cais do Sal.
From today until Sunday, there will be exhibitions of equipment and activities in the Fonte Nova garden and the Old Captaincy Building, as well as sea baptisms at the Aveirense Cruising Sailing Association.
Among the activities announced is the inauguration of a monument alluding to Navy Day on Thursday, and also two concerts: on Friday, the Navy band will perform with the singer Fernando Daniel in Praça Marquês de Pombal, and on Saturday, with the soprano Isabel Alcobia at the Aveirense Theatre.
Although May 20th is officially Navy Day, the traditional military ceremony will take place on Sunday, with a religious ceremony at the Aveiro Cathedral, followed by a parade of the forces on parade at the Fonte Nova pier, where a demonstration of capabilities will be held.
Various sporting activities will take place until Sunday, such as 'Cross Training Naval' or a "virtual race", which can be held anywhere in the country.
The activities extend to other parts of the country, from Vila Nova de Cerveira to Portimão, Madeira and the Azores.
On Monday, the 20th, the Vasco da Gama Aquarium, the Navy Museum and the Navy Planetarium in Lisbon, and the Frigate D. Fernando II e Glória as well as the Barracuda Submarine (recently reopened as a museum) in Cacilhas, municipality of Almada, will be open to the public free of charge.
