Homeless? Marcelo defends coordinated response from government and local authorities
The President of the Republic defended today that it is urgent to define the role of the State and the local authorities in the various dimensions of the problem of homeless people, in this period of Government transition.

Confronted with the request for an audience from the mayor of Lisbon to solve the problem, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that, initially, it is necessary to "know if the Government will maintain the strategy of the past or wants to introduce changes".
Speaking to journalists in Coimbra, on the sidelines of the commemorations of the 40th anniversary of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP), the head of State added that, in a second moment, it is necessary to "establish the model of articulation with the local authorities, especially with those that have this phenomenon in a more significant way".
"It is very urgent to know the role of the State and the local authorities in the various dimensions of the problem: housing, on the one hand, health, on the other, and the situation experienced today on the ground", said the President of the Republic.
For Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, there are very varied issues that are combined and, in order not to worsen the situation, it is "essential at this moment of transition to know the connection between local authorities and the new Government".
The mayor of Lisbon requested audiences with the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister to, together, solve the problem of homeless people in the city, which has been increasing since the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking today on the sidelines of the presentation of 25 new elements of the Municipal Police, Carlos Moedas told journalists that he had sent two letters to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Luís Montenegro because he considered that the "effort to solve the problem cannot be only of the local authorities".
Lisbon is the city most affected by the phenomenon and currently has about 3,000 homeless people, 300 of whom are effectively on the street.
