The Republican National Guard (GNR) rescued a young barn owl on Friday in the town of Erada, in the municipality of Covilhã, district of Castelo Branco.

According to a statement sent to Notícias ao Minuto, the alert was given by a civilian, who told the authorities that the animal in question "was wandering around".

In response to the alert, military personnel from the Environmental Protection Unit (NPA) of the Covilhã Territorial Detachment went to the site to carry out the rescue.

"Following the action, the animal was transported and handed over to the Wildlife Studies and Recovery Centre (CERAS) in Castelo Branco, to assess its health condition, provide treatment and later release it into its natural habitat", the statement reads.

In the statement, the military also state that the SEPNA is "daily concerned with the protection of animals" and calls for the reporting of offences. "For this purpose, the SOS Environment and Territory Line (808 200 520) can be used, operating 24 hours a day to report offences or clarify doubts", they also warn.
