A new smartphone app could be used to detect early signs of dementia.
Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in the US have found that tests carried out on a mobile phone could help detect frontotemporal dementia in people who are genetically predisposed to the condition.
According to the Euro News website, the researchers, in partnership with a software company, carried out the tests between 2019 and 2023. The app was tested on 360 participants, including 209 women and 151 men, with an average age of 54. The data collected included voice recordings, as well as tests of gait, balance and language.
Many of the participants were genetically predisposed to the condition, but did not yet have any symptoms. The tests found that the app was more accurate at identifying people who were "most likely to experience early symptoms" of dementia than a standard clinical cognitive test.
It is recognised that patients respond better to treatment if they are diagnosed early, but the condition can be difficult to diagnose.
