The book, published by Edições Afrontamento, has a partnership with the National Plan for Ethics in Sports (PNED) and is presented today at the Faculty of Human Motricity (FMH), with the presence of the Secretary of State for Sports, Pedro Dias, the president of the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IPDJ), Vítor Pataco, and presentation by the writer Gonçalo M. Tavares.

"Why sports and transcendence? I created the paradigm, from my doctoral thesis, which guides the FMH, in a work entitled 'Towards an epistemology of human motricity'. How do I define human motricity today? Intentional and supportive movement of transcendence", summarizes Manuel Sérgio, in an interview with Lusa.

The full professor, who also worked at the Brazilian Unicamp and other higher education institutions, summarizes his philosophy of sport as one in which motricity studies "people in the movement of overcoming, through play, sport, dance, ergonomics, rehabilitation".

"Whoever ran 100 meters in 10.01 seconds yesterday wants to run in 9.99 tomorrow. What is studied in sports is man overcoming himself. This is the meaning of transcendence. Transcendence means that man, at any age, in any situation, is always a task to be accomplished", he adds.

Thus, he conceives sport as being "for all ages, all people and all situations", based on movement and the understanding of the study of motricity as a new human science.

Retired full professor from FMH, visiting professor at Unicamp. The Catholic University has the Manuel Sérgio Chair.

Referred to by names such as José Mourinho, Jorge Jesus and José Maria Pedroto, the former leader of Belenenses will also present the second of four volumes that bring together texts from his extensive work, with more than fifty titles dedicated to philosophy and politics, in articulation with the sport.

The "Selected Work" has been worked on by university professors, under the guidance of José Eduardo Franco, and will have "four volumes of 400 pages each".

"They are summarizing my work. It will give about 1,600 pages, and in very small print...", says Manuel Sérgio.
