"Goal-line technology will help defend the truth of sport"
The goal-line technology (GLT) will allow a reinforcement of the tools to defend the truth of the sport in the I League from the 2025/26 season, the president of the Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP) noted today.

"It is another tool to help defend the truth in sports. When we want that to happen, all tools will be few to help refereeing teams and structures make the best decisions. That is the obligation of a regulator and the function of the LPFP", evaluated Pedro Proença, in statements to journalists.
The leader was speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of the first field of the Footpark project, in Senhora da Hora, in Matosinhos, on a day when the LPFP board approved the adoption of the GLT to evaluate goal chances, revealed to the Lusa agency a source linked to the process.
"It is a work that the LPFP started in the 2020/21 season and resulted from the cooperation of many people from the clubs belonging to the professional echelons. The decision was made today at a board meeting so that, in the next season, there will be an implementation phase and a testing process. After the video referee (VAR), the GLT is also arriving", he noted.
The LPFP will proceed with the public tender for the proposals to provide this service, in a process that will be accompanied by the executive director of that body, Helena Pires, by the clubs and by the Portuguese Football Federation.
"There is the introduction of technologies and the creation of more and better conditions in the defense of the sporting truth. We are satisfied. This process had to be well thought out and today we are prepared to do an implementation phase in the next season, so that, from July 1, 2025, we will have the GLT adopted", concluded Pedro Proença.
The English League was a pioneer in adopting this technology, in 2013, having already been introduced in the main championships of Italy, Germany, France and the Netherlands or in international competitions, involving the Champions League or the World Cup and the European Championship of national teams.
