"Europa Conference League Final consecrates Portuguese refereeing"
The appointment of a Portuguese refereeing team for the Europa Conference League final elevates the sector, admitted today the president of the Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP), 12 years after leading a continental decision.

"Obviously, I wish Artur [Soares Dias] the best. In other lives, I know what a moment like this means. It's a moment of consecration for Portuguese refereeing. I'm sure he'll be very successful", stated Pedro Proença.
The director was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the inauguration of the first field of the Footpark project, in Senhora da Hora, in Matosinhos, one day after UEFA revealed the presence of Artur Soares Dias, who already had a guaranteed presence in Euro2024, in the final of the third edition of the Europa Conference League, between the Greeks of Olympiacos and the Italians of Fiorentina, which will take place on May 29, at the AEK Arena, in Athens, the capital of Greece.
"[This news] Gives me satisfaction and a great joy, because football with talent is a transversal brand of our country. I think this is a time when we have to be more positive when we talk about our industry", appealed Pedro Proença.
The current president of the LPFP was the last Portuguese to referee a final of a European club competition, with the help of Bertino Miranda, Ricardo Santos, Duarte Gomes and Jorge Sousa, in May 2012, when he was in Bayern Munich-Chelsea, of the Champions League, with the English surpassing themselves by resorting to a penalty shootout (4-3, after a 1-1 draw at the end of extra time), in Munich, Germany.
Artur Soares Dias, 44 years old, who belongs to the Porto association, will be assisted by assistants Paulo Soares and Pedro Ribeiro, while Tiago Martins, also appointed for the next European Championship, will perform the functions of video referee (VAR).
This will be the fifth final of club competitions organized by UEFA with Portuguese referees, since, in addition to Pedro Proença in 2011/12, António Garrido directed the decisive duel of the then designated European Champion Clubs' Cup of 1979/80, and Vítor Pereira whistled the decisions of the UEFA Cup of 2001/02 and the European Super Cup of 2001.
Olympiacos, which includes the Portuguese Ruben Vezo, Chiquinho, João Carvalho, André Horta, Gelson Martins and Daniel Podence, will contest the Europa Conference League trophy with Fiorentina, which lost the 2022/23 final to the English of West Ham.
