The extra virgin olive oil saw its price rise by 73 cents between April 24 and May 1, according to data from DECO PROteste, which also reveals that, in the last year, the price of this product has increased by almost 70%.
"The price of extra virgin olive oil increased by 73 cents (7%) in just one week, between April 24 and May 1. On May 1, a 75-centiliter bottle of extra virgin olive oil cost, on average, 11.21 euros, 4.54 euros more (68% more) than a year ago. This was, in fact, the product whose price increased the most in the last year", explains the consumer protection organization.
However, and despite the price increases in some products, the price of the food basket monitored by DECO PROteste is slightly lower compared to the first week of the year.
"On May 1, this basket cost 235.19 euros, 86 cents less (0.36% less) than the price recorded on January 3. However, a year ago, on May 3, 2023, it cost 12.57 euros less (5.65% less) and, two years ago, on May 4, 2022, 29.20 euros less (14.17% less)", we can read.
In the last week, between April 24 and May 1, the biggest price increases were recorded in products such as:
- the sliced bread without crust, which increased by 26 cents (13% more), from 1.96 euros to 2.23 euros;
- the spaghetti, which increased by 14 cents (12% more), to 1.27 euros;
- and the cauliflower, which increased by 26 cents per kilo (11% more), to 2.66 euros per kilo.
