Yes, you read that correctly. It is very important to keep your toilet lid closed. Why? Karan Rajan, a doctor and TikTok content creator, explained to the blog aggregator Huffpost that flushing the toilet without putting the lid down creates a "toilet plume." According to the expert, this transforms the liquid in the toilet into an aerosol that can spray around the room.

He also mentioned that researchers have studied the movement of tiny water droplets from toilets and found that they can travel up to 2 meters per second and reach heights of 1.5 meters above the toilet bowl in just eight seconds.

In addition, the same study found that a percentage of the smaller droplets were able to remain in the air for minutes, even "at the perfect height for unsuspecting noses," warns the doctor.

But unfortunately, this list of unpleasant consequences doesn't end there. According to the doctor, the habit causes pathogens such as E. coli, adenovirus, and norovirus to be "blasted" into the air, carried by these droplets.

With this in mind, in addition to advising everyone to close the toilet lid, the expert recommends that you start disinfecting the toilet and toilet seat regularly to "reduce the pathogen load."
