Bay leaves are an incredible addition to any recipe. But, beyond that, they help repel the most hated pests, namely moths, flies, cockroaches, and rats. Don't believe it? Rocky Vuong of Calibre Cleaning Limited, quoted on Martha Stewart's website, explains what to do.
According to the expert, the herb helps because it has a bitter smell capable of warding off these pests, and, yes, "both dried and fresh leaves work great".
He further explains that "bay leaves are highly effective when it comes to protecting dry food from moths". How? "Just place a few leaves in rice, flour, and other dry goods and watch the magic happen."
