New recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force say women should start getting mammograms earlier to screen for breast cancer. The previous recommended age was 50, but now the task force says women should start getting them at age 40.
Under the new guidelines, women should get mammograms every other year starting at age 40. The task force first issued the recommendations in draft form in 2023, but they were officially published Tuesday.

"We have seen an uptick in the incidence of breast cancer in women in their 40s over the last eight years, and we know that starting screening at age 40 will allow us to find cancers at a smaller size and earlier stage," Dr. Michelle Specht told Fox News.
"Finding breast cancer early leads not only to a better chance of survival, but also a better quality of life . As a surgeon, I am able to perform less extensive surgery when cancers are found early," she continued.
"Mammography is the cornerstone of our strategy for early detection of this potentially deadly disease, when it is most curable," Karen Knudsen of the American Cancer Society said in a statement.
