According to the Irish government, 80% of recent illegal arrivals are crossing the land border, which is open under the 1998 peace deal between the British province of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Asked in an interview broadcast on Sky News on Sunday, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke of the deterrent effect of legislation passed this week that should soon allow the UK to deport migrants to Rwanda.

According to Irish public broadcaster RTE, citing a spokesperson for centrist Prime Minister Simon Harris, the government has asked its justice minister to bring forward proposals next week to amend existing legislation on the designation of safe third countries and to allow the return to the UK of applicants who are not eligible for international protection.

This is “one of a number of measures that we are taking to strengthen our system and make sure that it is robust, efficient and effective,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said the Irish premier “does not comment on the immigration policy of another country” but stressed “the importance of protecting the integrity of the immigration system in Ireland”.

The country of five million people, a member of the European Union, has in recent months been gripped by rising tensions over the housing of migrants, with increasingly hostile demonstrations sometimes marked by incidents.

On RTE, Irish Justice Minister Helen McEntee — responsible for home affairs — said on Saturday that she would discuss the return of migrants to the UK with British Home Secretary James Cleverly during a visit to London on Monday.

“What is clear from the decision that the UK took in terms of Brexit is that they are seeing an increase in the number of asylum seekers arriving into their country,” she said.

The minister said her concern as justice minister was to ensure “that we have an effective immigration system and structures in place”.

“That is why I will be bringing forward emergency legislation this week, to ensure that we can actually return people to the UK in an effective manner,” she added.
