Visas to Ethiopia restricted for not cooperating in readmitting irregulars
The European Union announced today the temporary restriction of visas to Ethiopian nationals, due to the country's lack of "cooperation" in the readmission of its irregular citizens, according to a statement from the European Council.

The 27 Member States will no longer be able to exempt Ethiopian nationals from the requirements regarding evidence to be presented in the visa application; they will no longer issue multiple-entry visas; and they will no longer exempt holders of diplomatic and service passports from the visa fee, as specified in the statement.
On the other hand, the normal deadline for issuing visas will be extended from 15 to 45 days.
"This decision arises following an assessment carried out by the Commission, which concludes that Ethiopia's cooperation in the area of readmission of its nationals in an irregular situation in the EU is insufficient", the text justifies.
"The Ethiopian authorities do not respond to readmission requests and there are ongoing difficulties regarding the issuing of emergency travel documents and the organisation of voluntary and non-voluntary return operations", the Council adds.
Brussels announces that "the suspension decision is temporary", but it also does not have a specific end date.
"The Commission will continue to assess the progress made in cooperation regarding readmission", the statement clarifies.
