In May 2022, Emily Presley went to the hospital with what she thought was the flu. She was admitted, diagnosed with an infection, and after months of treatments, she did not survive.
The 46-year-old teacher, from Kentucky, USA, was hospitalized for 16 months. Initially, she was put into a coma and for the first four months she was connected to a ventilator that did the work of her heart and lungs.
The cold developed into pneumonia and later, when she went to the hospital, she already had a staph infection.
According to the Daily Mail, her lungs were unable to oxygenate her body, and the woman underwent a first transplant.
However, Presley's immune system reacted negatively to the proteins in the new lungs, so it was recommended that they be removed, and she was once again placed on a waiting list. About 24 hours later, she received a new transplant.
Her health improved and, for months, Emily had to relearn how to walk, eat, and talk. The teacher returned home and was even considering going back to teaching. But her body betrayed her again and Emily died in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
"She was ready. She was prepared," says her husband Jeff.
The woman leaves behind two children and the family has decided to celebrate her life and legacy during these days. The ceremonies culminate on Saturday, the day of the funeral, and everyone has been advised to wear light-colored clothing to honor her "very bright life".
