In a joint statement to journalists, within the scope of a visit that the President of Djibouti is making to Bissau, Ismail Omar Guelleh and the Guinean head of state, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, highlighted the possibility of their respective countries increasing "south-south cooperation".
Declaring himself an enthusiast of cooperation between African countries, Umaro Sissoco Embaló said that Guinea-Bissau is interested in learning from Djibouti's experience in the area of infrastructure, emphasising that this country "developed its port infrastructure, occupying a strategic position in trade in eastern Africa".
Embaló said that he now wants that country to help develop the port of Bissau.
Ismail Omar Guelleh, who is in Bissau on a state visit between Sunday and Tuesday, said that it is possible to move forward in this area and also in air transport, in the tourism sector and in the training of Guinean staff in his country, within the scope of the General Cooperation Agreement that the two heads of state signed in February, during Sissoco Embaló's visit to Djibouti.
Omar Guelleh also highlighted the distinction that was given to him, with the Amílcar Cabral medal, the highest decoration of the Guinean state, which he said honours the citizens of Djibouti.
"I am honoured to be distinguished with a medal that pays homage to this great man and pan-Africanist, Amílcar Cabral. It touched me deeply on behalf of my country", Guelleh declared.
