The attack took place around 10:00 local time (same time in Lisbon), when the assailants attacked shepherds in the village of Monts de Lam, located in the province of Logone Oriental, near the border with the Central African Republic.
"The goal was to seize the cattle and money of these shepherds", the head of the local canton, Remte Ndiguengar, told EFE.
"The intervention of the police allowed the situation to be controlled. There were 27 dead, including three guards, 15 shepherds and nine attackers", he added.
The Chadian authorities attributed the attack to rebels based in the Central African Republic.
"We believe that this is an attack perpetrated by rebels from the Popular Rally for Justice and Equality of Chad. They are the ones who are spreading terror in this area", the governor of the province of Logone Oriental, Ahmat Bazine, told EFE.
In Logone Oriental, problems of access to resources, especially land and pastures, have often accentuated conflicts between farmers and cattle ranchers.
Its proximity to the northwest of the Central African Republic, an area known for the presence of rebel movements, further complicates the insecurity situation in that territory.
