According to the official results of the National Election Management Agency (ANGE), led by loyalists of the head of the ruling military junta, Mahamat "Kaka" Déby won 61.03% of the vote, against 18.53% for Succès Masra, also 40 years old. Eight other candidates had very weak results, with the exception of former Prime Minister Albert Pahimi Padacké, who officially won 16.91% of the vote. The official turnout was 75.89%. These figures, announced in Ndjamena on Thursday around 10 p.m. (the same time in Lisbon), but well before the official forecast, which pointed to the 21st, still have to be validated by the Constitutional Council, also composed of figures appointed by the head of the junta. Shortly after the announcement of the results, an army detachment positioned in the neighborhood where the party "Les Transformateurs" (The Transformers), of Succès Masra, is headquartered, fired several shots into the air, in an apparent sign of joy, but obviously also with the objective of dissuading any concentration of people, especially since the opposition leader had already announced the victory, justified by a vote count carried out by his own party. According to journalists from the France-Presse (AFP) news agency on the scene, some people ran to hide in their homes and the streets were quickly deserted. On the other hand, near the presidential palace, many of Kaka Déby's supporters celebrated the victory. There too, soldiers and civilians showed their joy, firing Kalashnikov machine guns into the air. Masra claimed victory on Thursday hours before the official results were announced, in a long speech on the social network Facebook, in which he accused Mahamat Déby's camp of having manipulated the results to announce the general's victory. Citing a compilation of vote counts by his own supporters, Masra appealed to Chadians to "not let victory be stolen (...) by mobilizing peacefully, but firmly". "I am now the President-elect of all Chadians," said Kaka Déby in a very brief and monotonous speech broadcast on television, promising to fulfill his "commitments". This election aims to mark the end of a three-year military transition, prepared to legitimize the young general, son of former dictator Idriss Déby Itno - allegedly killed on the front lines against rebel groups - proclaimed leader of a military junta of 16 generals on April 20, 2021. A fierce critic of the Déby dynasty, Succès Masra fled the country in October 2022, after the violent repression of protests that followed the announcement of the extension of the transition process, but ended up joining Mahamat Déby in January of this year, being appointed prime minister four months before the elections. The rest of the opposition, muzzled and violently repressed, sometimes with the physical elimination of its leaders, accuses Masra of being a "traitor" and of presenting himself as a presidential candidate to "give a democratic and pluralistic veneer" to an election that was always a given for Déby. However, Masra surprised many people during his campaign, gathering large crowds. Mahamat Déby was supported from the beginning of his installation by the army, in April 2021, by an international community - led by France - that was quick to condemn coup leaders in other parts of Africa. Paris still maintains a thousand soldiers in Chad, considered a pillar in the fight against Islamic extremists in the Sahel, after French soldiers were expelled from Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.
