Harris Wolobah was 14 years old when he died last September after participating in a viral TikTok challenge that involved eating an extremely spicy chip. The family immediately linked the boy's death to this challenge and now, the autopsy has confirmed that Harris lost his life due to a high consumption of pepper, combined with a 'heart defect' from which he suffered.
The report, reported Thursday by the Associated Press, reveals that the American boy ate a large amount of pepper extract and ended up dying. He suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest "in the context of recent ingestion of a food substance with a high concentration of capsaicin", the news agency reports.
The autopsy also states that the boy suffered from a congenital defect, which resulted in an enlarged heart - which may have made the boy more vulnerable in this situation.
It should be recalled that Harris died last September, after eating a Paqui brand potato, which was 'part' of the 'One Chip Challenge' - 'Potato Challenge', in free translation - launched by the manufacturer in question.
The 'chip', sold individually for 10 dollars - roughly the same value in euros - was presented to the public in a coffin-shaped package with a warning that it should be kept out of the reach of children. Paqui also stated that the potato was intended for the "revengeful pleasure of intense heat and pain", recalls the Associated Press, being produced with Carolina Reaper and Naga Viper peppers, two of the spiciest in the world.

Despite the warnings, children and teenagers 'rushed' to buy the product and, in the United States, there were many cases of illness after the youngest participated in the challenge - which has since gone viral on social networks. This consisted of eating the potato with very high levels of spiciness and then holding out for as long as possible without consuming anything else.
Paqui ended up "voluntarily" withdrawing the 'chip' in question from the shelves in September 2023. "We have seen an increase in reports of teenagers and other individuals who have ignored the warnings," the brand said at the time.
Thus, the 'One Chip Challenge' was discontinued.
