The two blue sharks, a species of shark that is quite common in Portuguese waters (Prionace glauca, commonly known as dogfish), were sighted on Saturday, April 27, next to the Nadadouro Wharf, in the Braço da Barrosa, announced the local authority, in the district of Leiria, in a statement.

Despite being quite common in coastal waters, "their presence in the inner part of the lagoon is an extremely rare event and should be considered as random", can be read in the note, in which the council explains that the path of the Aberta (canal that connects the lagoon to the sea) to the Braço da Barrosa "will have resulted, most likely, from the feeding activity of this species, which involves, above all, the capture of small fish, cuttlefish and squid".

Despite being sharks, the local authority stresses that these are "fragile species and, for the most part, at risk of extinction", considering that "in a normal situation there is no reason for alarm".

Even so, "in the event of a sighting, it is not recommended to stay in the water", warns the local authority, adding that "these species should not be pursued, cornered or touched, since, if they feel threatened, they may have behavioural changes that involve risk to people".

According to the Council, "it is most likely that these two blue sharks will return to the sea autonomously, which may have already happened", but in the event of a new sighting inside the lagoon, the observation should be reported to the Peniche Harbour Master's Office (262 790 330) and to the ICNF - Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (968 849 101) so that they can be rescued and returned to the ocean.

The presence of the blue sharks was reported by the municipalities of Caldas da Rainha and Óbidos (both bordering the lagoon) to the Maritime Authority, the ICNF and the Civil Protection - Oeste Sub-Regional Command.
