In a statement released today, Quercus specifies that, of the 420 "Golden Quality" beaches, 349 are coastal beaches (83%), 61 inland (15%) and 10 transitional (2%).

The Tejo/Oeste and Norte regions are the most awarded, with 103 and 81 beaches, respectively, with 76 coastal, 26 inland and one transitional beach in the Tejo/Oeste region.

Of the 81 awarded beaches in the Norte region, 66 are coastal, 26 are inland and one is transitional.

The Norte and Azores regions (60 distinguished beaches) were the regions that registered the greatest increase when compared to last year (16 more and 14 more awards, respectively), followed by the Centro and Tejo/Oeste regions (with five more awards each) and the Alentejo region (with three more awards).

The Algarve was the area with the sharpest decline, with 16 fewer awarded beaches, motivated, in most cases, "by the failure to comply with the criterion relating to the analyses carried out in the 2023 bathing season", explained Quercus.

According to the association, "somewhat persistent levels of pollution, not fully clarified, were observed in the Algarve territory, but the impact of tourist pressure in this region may have contributed to this".

This year, the Algarve has 69 "Golden Quality" beaches, of which 68 are coastal and one is transitional.

The environmental association adds that this year there were nine new bathing areas with "Golden Quality", three in the Centro region, two in the Azores, one in the Tejo/Oeste region, one in the Algarve, one in Madeira and one in the Norte region.

The "Golden Quality Beach" award annually distinguishes the quality of bathing water on Portuguese beaches, based on the official public information available, taking into account exclusively the analyses carried out in the laboratories of the different Regional Water Authorities, according to Quercus.

To receive the distinction, the bathing water must meet several criteria, such as "excellent" water quality in the annual classification of the five bathing seasons prior to the last one. All analyses carried out in the last bathing season (2023) must have presented better results in several bacterial indicators.
