Ana Gomes defended this Sunday, in the usual comment space, on SIC Notícias, that the Government's statement on the colonial issue was a way for Montenegro to revise Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa's "aberrant, absurd and indecent" statements about the Prime Minister.
"The Portuguese Government, perhaps for Luís Montenegro to take revenge for the other things – absolutely unacceptable things that the President of the Republic said to foreign correspondents, namely the comparisons he made between the two Prime Ministers, something that is aberrant, absurd and indecent -, put out a statement distancing itself from the President of the Republic on these issues of historical reparations. A statement that seems to me not only to want to buy a war with the President, but also to be absurd for putting itself in a position of refusal. He says that he follows the procedure of the previous government, he does not follow", said the former socialist MEP, recalling that this "revenge" can bring problems for Portugal.
"This will create international problems for us, namely with our brother countries. We did not need this attitude on the part of the Government for the Government to distance itself from the President of the Republic", he stressed.
It is recalled that, days after Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa insisted on reparation to the former colonies in conversation with Brazilian journalists, the Government issued a statement stating that "there was not and is not any process or program of specific actions with the purpose" of reparation for the Portuguese colonial past and where it also defended that it will be guided "by the same line" of previous executives on this matter.
"Regarding the issue of reparation to these States and their peoples for the colonial past of the Portuguese State, it is important to emphasize that the current Government is guided by the same line as previous Governments", stressed the Executive of Luís Montenegro in a statement.
