In addition to the anticipation of carbon neutrality by 2045, the European Union must mobilize to reduce 80% of its dependence on fossil fuels by 2030 and the neutrality of the energy sector by 2035, defends the European Climate Pact in a statement, an initiative of the European Green Pact, promoted by the European Union and which in Portugal is coordinated by the environmental association Zero.

The challenge to the 21 candidates who will be elected in the European elections is officially presented on Saturday in Lisbon, within the scope of the 'Activate Climate Action Festival', which starts today and ends on Sunday.

Candidates are asked to place environmental issues at the center of political work in Strasbourg and Brussels and to commit to defending the main conclusions of the last UN climate summit, COP28 (in 2023 in Dubai).

"Faced with the climate emergency that the world is going through, it is essential that candidates from all parties running in Portugal in the next European elections have environmental issues at the center of their political proposals", says Duarte Costa, ambassador of the European Climate Pact for climate action, quoted in the statement.

The European Climate Pact advocates the elimination of fossil fuels and the transition to renewable energy systems in a fair, orderly and equitable manner, as a way to limit the increase in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius in the coming decades.

"The Portuguese who are elected to the European Parliament must demand drastic reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions this decade, in accordance with scientific recommendations", says Duarte Costa.

The Activate Festival is organized by the environmental association Zero and is divided into workshops, music, dance, documentaries, debates, artistic expressions and various sports activities.

It takes place in the old Rato market and in Campo Mártires da Pátria, in Lisbon, and its mission is "to involve and mobilize all people in a true alliance for the good of the planet and all its ecosystems", says Islene Façanha, of the organization.

The European Climate Pact aims to mobilize communities in Europe for investments, activities and processes that are progressively less dependent on fossil fuels.
