Harimoto started better and comfortably won the first two sets, by 11-6 and 11-7, against the 17th in the ITTF ranking.

"I didn't start well in the first two sets. But then I managed to find strength and tactics to return to 2-2", said the Madeira native to Lusa, at the end of the match.

Marcos Freitas won the following sets, by double 11-9, to tie the match. However, the Japanese was stronger in the final stretch, winning the two decisive sets, by 11-7 and 11-6, and closing the match in 4-2, after 51 minutes.

"I failed a little in the tactical issue, in the reception. I already knew that he was a very good player, very difficult", lamented the Portuguese player, also referring to Tomokazu Harimoto.

In the group stage, Marcos Freitas had beaten the Nigerian Quadri Aruna (19th in the world), a former Sporting player, by 3-1, after a 4-0 victory against Daniel González (88th in the ranking), from Puerto Rico.

Freitas was the last Portuguese in the competition, after the elimination of Tiago Apolónia, João Geraldo and Fu Yu in the group stage.

Each of the 32 groups had three players, who played once against each other, with the winner of the group moving on to the knockout rounds.

The ITTF Macau World Cup 2024, which is taking place until April 21, brings together 96 players, including world champion Fan Zhendong, ITTF ranking leader Wang Chuqin and women's champion and ranking leader Sun Yingsha.

"It ends up being a good performance, the round of 16. The best in the world are here and it was a good test for the Olympic Games", said Marcos Freitas.

In February, during the World Team Championships, the men's table tennis team, composed of Marcos Freitas, Tiago Apolónia, João Geraldo, Diogo Carvalho and João Monteiro, qualified for the Games.

In addition to the team spot, which will be composed of three players, Portugal has also secured the presence in the individual tournament of the two Portuguese who have the best world ranking on June 18.

Marcos Freitas said that his goal is to enter the group of eight seeds in the men's individual competition at the Olympic Games, in order to have a theoretically easier opponent in the first round.
