In a letter sent on May 2 to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, to which the France-Presse agency had access today, the Leagues and FIFPro claim that the football competition calendar is now "beyond saturation". The future Club World Cup, contested by 32 teams, including Benfica and FC Porto, is scheduled to take place between June 15 and July 13, 2025. The signatories of the appeal consider that these calendar changes have created "economic damage" to the national leagues and have pushed players "beyond their limits", which is why they are asking the FIFA Council to reschedule the Club World Cup and to reopen discussions on the international calendar for the period up to 2030. "If FIFA refuses to formally commit to resolving the above issues at its next Council, we will be forced to advise our members on the options available to them, both individually and collectively, to proactively protect their interests", the two entities warn in the letter sent to Infantino. These options include, according to the same interlocutors, legal action against FIFA, for which they will seek advice from an expert outside of football.
The Leagues and the union accuse FIFA of "continuously making unilateral decisions that benefit its own competitions and commercial interests", while "negatively affecting the national Leagues and players".
