Charles Spencer revealed he received a birthday present that left him emotional because of the connection it had to his late sister, Princess Diana.
The Earl Spencer celebrated his 60th birthday last Monday, May 20, at Althorp, the estate where he grew up with his three sisters, Diana, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes. He took to Instagram to share photos of a canoe he received and explained what made the gift so touching.
"I had 30 or so friends and family to stay for the weekend," Charles Spencer wrote on his account. "The after dinner speech on Saturday night was given by 'William Purefoy' who was a new boy at Maidwell - those who have read 'To School in a Pickle' will recognise him," he continued.
"I was taken down to the lake at Althorp on Saturday by a friend. Her husband has spent many months secretly making me this incredibly beautiful canoe as a birthday present. I nearly cried when I saw it. It is almost too beautiful to use," the Earl wrote.
"He said 'I thought it might be useful when you visit your sister'. Such an incredibly thoughtful idea," he added, revealing the reason behind his emotional reaction.
Princess Diana is buried on the Oval Lake's island at the center of Althorp's Round Oval, which is surrounded by trees planted by Prince William, Prince Harry and Diana herself. The island, which is only accessible by the lake, is "a happy and peaceful place" for the princess to be buried, Earl Spencer told People.
