Christopher Cash, 29, and Christopher Berry, 32, are being prosecuted under the Official Secrets Act.
During a brief hearing at the Old Bailey criminal court in the British capital, the two men spoke only to confirm their identities, and the judge said their trial would take place in 2025.
Judge Jeremy Baker set a further hearing for October 4. Both men were released on bail, with conditions including not travelling abroad.
Christopher Cash worked for members of parliament from the governing Conservative Party when he was arrested in March 2023, while Christopher Berry had held various academic posts in China since 2015 and was arrested while visiting the UK.
The pair are accused of obtaining, collecting, recording, publishing or communicating documents "with intent to prejudice the safety or interests of the state" and which could be "directly or indirectly useful to an enemy".
The charges relate to the period January 2022 to February 2023 for Christopher Cash, who denies the charges against him, and December 2021 to February 2023 for Christopher Berry.
Beijing has strongly denied the espionage allegations.
