The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE) reported this Thursday that seven crew members of the ship seized by Iran have been released.

"The Portuguese Government has promptly notified the States that these seven crew members are nationals", reveals the MNE in a statement to which Notícias ao Minuto had access, detailing that they are "five citizens of Indian nationality, one of Filipino nationality and one of Estonian nationality, who was the only citizen of the European Union who was on board".

There are currently 17 people on board. A woman, of Indian nationality, had already left the ship.

The Portuguese Government welcomes this development and reiterates the "immediate release of these crew members of the MCS Aries ship" to the Iranian executive.

"International legality requires the immediate release of these crew members and the MSC Aries ship. Portugal will continue to make every effort to ensure that these international obligations are fully met", the note ends.

In mid-April, Iranian military forces seized the cargo ship, with a Portuguese flag (registered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira), in the Strait of Hormuz, the owner being Zodiac Maritime Limited, which is part of the group of Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer.

The container ship had 25 crew members on board, most of whom were Indian.

Iran has since claimed to have captured the freighter for violating international maritime regulations.

"The ship was directed to Iranian territorial waters due to the violation of international maritime regulations and the lack of response to the Iranian authorities", said the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Nasser Kanani, at a press conference.
