"The ULS [local health unit] Santa Maria confirms the judicial notification in relation to this case for a non-face-to-face consultation, having immediately created conditions for the court's decision to be executed", it indicated.
The position of the ULS Santa Maria, according to the same source, was based on "following the clinical opinions of the teams that are following the case" and on "guaranteeing equity in relation to all other cases with the same pathology followed by their teams and who have regular face-to-face consultations".
According to the lawyer for the twins' family, Wilson Bicalho, the teleconsultation "has already taken place and went perfectly well".
In the court notification, to which Lusa had access, the teleconsultation, which took place today, aimed at "a multidisciplinary observation analysis", with the purpose of assessing respiratory function, a neurological examination and the assessment of the evolution of motor function, after the application of the medication.
The court stated that the air travel between Brazil and Portugal could be harmful to the children's health, criticizing the "poor performance of the doctors at ULS - Santa Maria, who released data and information about the twins".
According to the court, the dissemination of data fostered "sensationalist journalism that for months disclosed in the 'media' the faces of the minors and aspects related to their medical treatment, in disrespect of the children's fundamental rights".
The case of the two twins residing in Brazil who acquired Portuguese nationality and received the drug Zolgensma in Portugal in 2020, at a total cost of four million euros, was disclosed by TVI last November and is still being investigated by the Public Prosecutor's Office (PGR).
The General Inspectorate for Health Activities (IGAS) has already concluded that these children's access to the neuropediatric consultation was illegal.
