Former Russian President and current Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia Dmitry Medvedev warned on Monday that sending troops to Ukraine "will mean the direct involvement" of Western countries in the war, to which Moscow will have to "respond."

"The chorus of irresponsible scoundrels among the Western political elite calling for the deployment of their troops to a non-existent country is growing," Medvedev said in a post on Telegram, after the leader of the Democratic Party in the US House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, admitted that there is a "significant likelihood" that American soldiers will be sent to fight in Ukraine.

In addition to sending troops, Medvedev said, countries such as France, the United Kingdom, and Poland "are also calling for the active use of their missile weapons" throughout Russia.

"Sending troops to Ukraine will mean the direct involvement of their countries in the war, to which we will have to respond. And, unfortunately, not on the territory of Ukraine. In this case, none of them will be able to hide either in the Capitol, or in the Élysée Palace, or in 10 Downing Street," he added, ensuring that "a global catastrophe will come."

The Russian also said that this was "why" the country "began preparations for exercises, including practical training activities for the preparation and use of non-strategic nuclear weapons."

On Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov had already said that the announcement of Russian nuclear exercises was a response to statements by "Western representatives" about a possible deployment of "NATO troops" to Ukraine.

According to Peskov, these leaders "spoke about the desire and even the intention to send armed contingents to Ukraine, that is, to place NATO soldiers in front of the Russian army."

The Kremlin spokesman considered this to be "a new cycle of escalating tension," denouncing the "very dangerous rhetoric" of the French president.
