Lars Emil Bruun, a Danish shipping magnate, will have his vast coin collection sold 100 years after his death.
The businessman, who made his fortune in the butter trade, died in 1923. He left behind a collection of 20,000 coins that could now be worth £72 million.
Before he died, Bruun stipulated that his collection should not be sold for 100 years after his death. He had hoped the collection would become part of Denmark’s national reserves.
Stack’s Bowers will auction the collection in the autumn, describing it as “the most valuable single-owner coin collection ever offered at public auction.”
The collection has been known to exist in Denmark but has never been seen in public. “The collection has remained essentially intact, unlike those of his contemporaries, which were long ago dispersed,” the New York-based auction house said on its website.
Lars Emil Bruun died aged 71 on November 21, 1923.
His collection of coins and medals has been held at the National Museum of Denmark.
