In the opening speech of his 25th meeting, which is taking place in a hotel unit in Bissau, Nicolau dos Santos welcomed the Chiefs of Staff of the CPLP Armed Forces, hoping that "the historic flame" will continue to unite the nine countries of the community.
"Feel at home because it is a home where, after all, we understand each other in Portuguese", said the Guinean Defense Minister, who listed the objectives of the meeting.
Nicolau dos Santos noted that the Bissau meeting should serve for "reflection and convergence of visions" that allow for greater rapprochement between the countries, giving "greater effectiveness" to the Armed Forces in their missions.
Among the missions, the Guinean official highlighted the promotion of actions aimed at guaranteeing the security and stability of the countries of the Portuguese-speaking community.
Nicolau dos Santos stressed that, within the scope of globalization, countries are confronted with "previously unimaginable challenges" motivated by geopolitics and strategy.
"We are witnessing a framework of blocs of nations with antagonistic interests and the expansion of religious and political extremism, the consequences of which have been greatly affecting the social and economic life of the populations", noted the Guinean Defense Minister.
Nicolau dos Santos argued that, in the face of this scenario, the Armed Forces "are called upon to play a leading role" in the tasks of maintaining peace, security and stability both at the level of their respective countries and at the international level.
In a concrete way, the Guinean minister hopes that the Bissau meeting will find answers to questions such as the possible way to coordinate actions so that the operability of the Armed Forces becomes a reality, as well as how to ensure that the actions of the Armed Forces are based on reliable and responsible information or how to increasingly reinforce the republican character of the CPLP Armed Forces and their natural commitment to peace, security and stability for citizens.
Nicolau dos Santos said it was an honor for Guinea-Bissau to host "such illustrious guests".
The military chiefs of the CPLP paid a courtesy visit to the Guinean President, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, but did not make any statements to journalists at the end of the meeting.
