A Danish court has dismissed a complaint by a patient who accused a hospital of violating her human rights by failing to provide her with meals that met her vegan diet during her stay.
The Vegetarian Society of Denmark took the legal action against the administrative region that runs hospitals in and around Copenhagen, the Associated Press news agency reports, on behalf of the woman.
It argued that the patient’s dietary choice was protected under the European Convention on Human Rights and that she had therefore been discriminated against when she was not offered enough vegan food during her hospital stay in 2020.
However, the District Court in Hillerød, north of Copenhagen, ruled that the complaint was unfounded, as the woman had the option of bringing her own food, or arranging for family or others to do so. She could also have bought vegan food at the hospital, the court added.
“I find it very surprising that the court believes that what I was offered can be considered adequate vegan food, both in terms of nutrition and taste,” said the woman, who complained that she had been given only “dry white rice, roasted carrots, celery and boiled potatoes”.
