In a note sent to Lusa, the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) highlighted that, in 2023, the working groups for the reduction of ignitions in rural areas investigated 1,072 fires and "172 territories with a high level of causality", and carried out "40 awareness-raising actions on the use of fire".

The working groups, formed by multidisciplinary teams with elements from ICNF, the Judiciary Police (PJ) and the National Republican Guard (GNR), also carried out 43 awareness-raising actions aimed at the general population, produced "54 studies and/or recommendations on ignition prevention" and provided 36 training actions.

According to ICNF, the working groups for the reduction of ignitions in rural areas aim, among other objectives, to "reinforce the investigation of rural fires, carry out awareness-raising actions on the use of fire" and "awareness-raising actions aimed at the general population".

These awareness-raising actions aim to promote "behavioural changes and the adoption of best safety practices, individual and collective, with a view to reducing the number of ignitions in rural areas", the note reads.

"With a logic of integrating the attributions and competences of the various institutions, which are complementary, the working groups have been highly contributory to the reduction in the number of fire occurrences linked to intentional causes and negligent use of fire", considered ICNF.

The working groups are active in the NUTS (Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistical Purposes) II regions of the North, Centre and Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML).
