Firefighters League demands 25 million in debt for transporting patients
The Portuguese Firefighters League (LBP) today demanded, in a meeting with the Minister of Health, the regularization of debts related to the transport of non-urgent patients, which already amount to 25 million euros.

In statements to Lusa, the president of the LBP, António Nunes, explained that the delays in payment are related to procedural issues, emphasizing that a three-week deadline was given to the guardianship to define a regularization plan.
"It is unacceptable that today the health debt" to corporations for the transport of non-urgent patients "could reach 25 million euros", said António Nunes.
The payment for the transport of urgent patients is ensured by the National Institute of Medical Emergencies (INEM) and has already been the subject of a memorandum of understanding between the League and the executive board of the National Health Service.
In this case, "what is needed is to increase the amount paid, which is lower than the actual cost of the corporations".
But the debt related to the transport of non-urgent patients must start to be paid, warned António Nunes.
"We cannot wait much longer for the payment of debts to humanitarian associations and fire departments", which are facing treasury difficulties because of these delays.
However, more than settling the overdue amounts, referring to this year and 2023, António Nunes argues that "a regularity of payment that has not been achieved until now" should be created.
"The disappearance of the Regional Health Administrations created some complex situations in the payment process", because the responsibility should now fall to the Local Health Units, which, in many cases, "did not have this foreseen".
António Nunes admits that a "central service" could be created to concentrate payments, but the "fact is that there is a patient transport management system that has to be paid".
This "is not a problem from a medical point of view, it is from the point of view of management, of procedural organization, and we need the Ministry of Health to make clear decisions on this matter", added the leader who, however, was satisfied with the openness of the minister Ana Paula Martins.
"The balance was positive" and "we were promised a response" to the demands, he stressed.
