Vote of condemnation? "We do not align with Chega's media show offs"

Even though she recognized that Marcelo's words were "unfortunate", Inês de Sousa Real stressed that "the country has nothing to gain by having the AR debate motions of censure that will not be approved, that are doomed from the moment they are presented".

The PAN spokesperson, Inês de Sousa Real, condemned, this Monday, the initiative of the far-right party Chega regarding the presentation of a formal vote of condemnation against the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in light of the statements that the Head of State made about the reparations owed for the Portuguese colonial past.

“It seems to us that the Portuguese people do not live with media circuses. What Chega is yet again doing is stunts, instead of being in the Assembly of the Republic (AR) working on the problems and the difficulties and the cost of living that people continue to feel”, said the official, next to the Constitutional Court, where the parties will, throughout today, submit the lists for the European elections.

Although she acknowledged that Marcelo’s words were “unfortunate”, Sousa Real stressed that “the country has nothing to gain from having the AR discuss motions of censure that will not be approved, which are doomed from the moment they are presented”.

“We should be talking about the minimum wage, the average wage, lowering the VAT, concluding the work on the tax reform, […] or even matters of nature conservation and animal protection. That is what we will be in the AR for and we evidently do not align ourselves with Chega’s media show offs”, she said.

The PAN spokesperson also pointed out that “the right to reparations from the former colonies is a right that should be discussed and talked about, but in another context and with another type of stakeholders, such as the Government, which does not agree with throwing certain ideas into the air”.

Because, let us recall, the President of the Republic suggested that Portugal assume responsibility for the crimes committed during the colonial era, proposing the payment of reparations for the mistakes of the past, during a dinner with foreign journalists.

"We cannot sweep this under the rug or put it in a drawer. We have an obligation to lead this process, because if we do not lead it, assuming it, what happened with countries that, having been colonial powers, after x years lost the capacity for dialogue and understanding with the former colonies will happen", he warned.

After Marcelo’s statements, the Government stated, in a communiqué, that "there was not and is not any process or programme of specific actions with the purpose" of reparations for the Portuguese colonial past and defended that it will be guided "by the same line" as previous Executives.

Even so, Chega pointed out that it will summon the Minister of Foreign Affairs to Parliament, "to find out if there is any type of contact on this matter with the Portuguese-speaking States or any specific request made to the Portuguese State", since, in its view, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s words represent "a betrayal of the Portuguese people and their History".
